Do you know what type that was from the blend? I'd love to try growing some of that myself!

No, sorry Error. I just know it is one from Baker Creek's Rocky Top mix.
I considered saving seeds from it, but I don't have space for that.

My Kratky closet is in the salad business again. Romaine, perpetual spinach (spinach-tasting chard), and bok choy. I have upped the nutrients this time because the bok choy developed severe nutrient deficiencies last time.
Also I'm hoping the extra nutrients and squirt of Cal-mag will help prevent tipburn in the lettuce. (And I like dark green Romaine.)

The romaine is doing well. I see one leaf with a brown margin, so I may have gotten my nutrients a little high.

Love how healthy those dark green leaves look. And no bug holes either like ones grown outside.
I remember seeing perpetual spinach seeds for sale and thinking of buying them. How do you like the taste compared to regular spinach? Have you found it grows well in a hydroponic setup?

The perpetual spinach has a pleasantly mild flavor. Not quite chard and not quite spinach. I like the young leaves in a mixed greens salad. I doubt I would like it cooked. I also enjoy walking by it and just grazing on a few leaves.
It is doing well in my kratky systems, but I am discovering it needs more nutrients than lettuce.

Sounds like a good alternative to spinach. It's always fun to try new veggies that they don't sell in stores. I am glad it seems to be thriving!

shad, it has been so many experiments ago that I don't remember. I tried all different heigts. A few inches above the plants provided enough light without burning them. If I could put my hand at the canopy level and feel heat, it was too close.
What finally got me out of Kratky on a smaller scale (small containers) is I discovered I couldn't just set it and forget it. In those small containers the plants used more of some nutrients and less of others. The nutrients got unbalanced and the plants got sick.
The only way to keep them going was giving them fresh nutrients every two weeks. That got to be a pain in so many small containers.
And nutrient needs differed. On levels that my lettuce was happy with, my bok choy and Chinese cabbage turned purple, then yellow, then died.
My new attempt will be larger containers with air pumps, and all the same plants in each tote.
I will still change out the nutrients every two weeks, but there will be fewer containers to mess with.
For inspiration, check out Mike's totes. He is just starting new batches, but in the past he has had some amazing results!

I think it looks like a flower!
