I've done both. A wash will only make 'em brown easier and darker. I don't bother.

My beautiful tomatoes turned out bland and completely tasteless.
It was my fault -- and I managed to fix the problem.
Because I had fried my last two tomato attempts with overfeeding them, I was overly cautious with these.
I started the previous tomato attempt with 8 ml AG nutrients. It was too high, and the tomatoes were curled over and too dark. When I switched to the 12 ml at the 3rd feeding, it killed them.
So I started this batch at 6 ml, and then kept them at 7.5 ml. They matured and looked beautiful. But when I tasted the first ripe tomatoes, they had no flavor at all. They were worse than awful.
So I did some research and that's when discovered that I was way under feeding them. I should have started pumping up the nutrients when the first tomatoes appeared.
I started using a low nitrogen, high phosphorus bloom booster and increasing the nutrient strength. At 900 ppm, they started tasting like watery tomatoes. At 1200 ppm, they started tasting really good. Bright, sweet and juicy.
I think they would be even better at 1400 ppm, but the leaves are telling me they have all the nitrogen they want right now,
So I finally have the delicious little tomatoes I hoped for.
They are already putting on flowers for the next crop!

I am terminating this project today because I have a glut of ripe tomatoes outdoors.
However, I have two healthy cuttings from these plants, so will start them in Kratky in a couple of weeks.

Shucks, I wouldn't terminate them if I were you. Them outdoor plants won't live very long unlike their AG cousins. Just harvest and toss, they'll produce forever.

thegrindre , I am getting bored with the older projects. I want to try some new things. I have one fairytale eggplant in a Harvest that I want to put in the tomatoes' Bounty. The tomato cuttings may end up back in their Bounty home after the eggplant is done.

You're growing eggplant in a AG? I would like to see that. Is it a hybrid mini small?

Rick, others here have grown fairytale eggplant. The fruit is about 4" long, purple and white striped, prolific, and beautiful. Diane has a long thread under the Vegetables category.
It is a dwarf hybrid, but you need a tall machine to grow it in.
