Just read this thread as I am having issues with Romain germinating. I had dropped the seeds to the bottom of the sponge hole. Trying again but this time with them up near the top. Actually cut off some of the top of the sponge
Just happened to do a search on seeds that need light to germinate. Seeds that require light to germinate are lettuce and savory. These seeds should not be covered with soil or just barely. Press these seeds into the soil with your finger or thumb so that the seed is just surrounded but not covered with soil. Keep the soil just moist and protect these seeds from drying sun, wind, and foraging birds by covering the seedbed with a light floating row cover.
I did notice the 2 sponges that had romain in them had fallen over to one side in the cage and were very hard to see the seed.. will find out in a few days if this was the issue for me. Hope you garden is doing well!

I use pointed tweezers and push then into the inner sponge near the top so they don't fall in to far
