I wonder what other medium you can use and also if growing in the winter would do better with less flies or none at all.

The rest of my grow bowls and my aquasprouts I use expanded clay pebbles. They don't completely fix the gnat problem, but they don't get moldy and nasty.

Well that is good.
Gnats are horrible, I hate them. I had them in my recent GAL flower project and had to terminate. I will try to grow again in the dead of winter so hopefully no gnats then.
