I was thinking of a vertical strip that is just taped at the top so it can quickly flip up to see water levels, but ideally it'll hold the right amount for the life cycle. I cut a narrow vertical strip in this water reservoir and never had an algae problem so that should work. I have been using this for about 8 years without an issue. 20241004_085741

So far, I have only used 1 quart mason jars to grow Monte Carlo and Rabbello Romaine lettuces. I started off using old socks to cover the jars, but they were so tight and difficult to lower when checking the liquid level. Recently, I found these Kratky Blackout Sleeves on Amazon that have a draw string with a spring cord lock. It makes it much easier to check the liquid level which needs to be replenished as the romaine lettuce grows. Kratky Blackout Sleeves by MoonShadows, on Flickr
