[Active/Hugel] Barrel #3 (Birdhouse Gourd!) (May 26, 2021)

This barrel is a 55 gallon barrel, filled with logs (see: hugelkultur) and food scraps, then topped off with bagged potting soil. I let it sit for two weeks and now I've planted some seeds into it:
In the middle of the barrel, I placed four Bradshaw's Birdhouse Gourd seeds from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. Around that (for the rest of the barrel) I sprinkled some old Sweet Italian Basil and Dark Purple Opal Basil seeds. Someone expressed interest in purchasing fresh basil for pesto from me, so I figured I could use this to grow some.
I sprinkled a light layer of woodchips over the gourd seeds to assist in germination, and then placed a piece of white plastic over the barrel to prevent evaporation. I'll check on it daily and remove it as soon as I see a seedling. (or remove it next time it rains)
