Terminated 5/13 Heritage Seeds Birdie Rouge (tomato)

This guy just keep blooming!!  For the size of the plant the fruit load is just insane!  I was not going to add Potassium Nitrate to any of these plant as they are soo small compared to last years outdoor plant.  The fertilizer mix calls  for it in stage 3 of growth which both the true Dwarf plants are  now in.    With this weeks mix I did add it at a reduced level to see how they react.  Just to Bridieand Lise.   Mix calls for 1/5 tsp per gallon I only added 1/16th this time around.

It is hard to tell, I have never grown these.  The plants I use for outside are some of the shortest days to maturity on the market.  I think the  Burpee early 4th of july are 48 days.    I normally start them middle of April now, plant first or second week of May and eat first fruit last week of june/first week of july all depends on weather.  In years gone by I would start sooner and have marble sized tomatoes when put out side.  This did not really speed things up as the roots were pot bound and I was trying to mananage a dozen 7" pot inside.  Once moved out the would just sit there in the cold soil.   So now I put them out when they are just growing out of the 4" pots and let the root system grow in the ground. 

These dwarfs are a bit slower I think but not to much.  Ellie (Bunny Hop Seeds)  says they are all very early but did not give me days to maturity.

Lynnee, I just looked up my FB posts from last year (made for just this purpose)  My outdoor Burpee Early 4th of July tomatoes took 87 days from seed to mouth.  Birdie Rouge, assuming the first one is ready to eat in 7 days, will be exactly 87 days, seed to mouth!!

Just waiting.. Normally with my outdoor plants I would have picked these already, but Ellie from Bunny Hop Seed as well as many here  say the micro dwarfs taste best when left on until red ripe, so I will wait and see..

Picked a few, wife had one, but unfortunately did not lead off with the fresh one and started with her Campari and then tried the Birdie.. said it did not taste good.. will wait to see how things progress before passing judgement.  We found with last years experiment using our known variety, that artificial light seem to play the largest part in the way they taste.  My plan now is that when the weather gets warm enough I will move the 2 micro dwarfs out side and let the nano encompass the tent.

I am hoping that as they continue to ripen they taste better.. I also have not personally tasted any, will try some tomorrow at lunch!

I had one today, could have been a little bit riper, did not taste "Bad", just very mild compared to Campari..

4-17 Picked a bunch of the ripest.. got tired of waiting.  Have them in a container with a bunch of rip Campari tomatoes.. the off gassing of the riper Campari's helps speed the ripening process..
