Today these plants were pruned along with everything else I’m growing. I mostly worked on removing leaves near the trunk and under the top canopy. They’re so tight and compact that it was difficult. That’s probably my fault for FIM’ing them. There are peppers everywhere though.

Yes, these are dense plants that have a ton of leaves. With that you do get a lot of flowers and peppers too!

These plants are chock full of peppers and are still spreading. And the very first pepper that started on either is just starting to show shades of red, though it’s a bit hard to see in this photo.

Well that first fruit is now almost entirely red. And what a red it is. The underside is taking juuust a bit longer though. Both plants continue to grow well.

As mike has said many times and I totally agree, the Sweet Heats have the most beautiful color I have seen in peppers.

I came back from traveling for work to find a lot more red on these plants than when I left. I’m going to harvest some of these over the coming weekend. I think I’ll make a sauce with them.

I finally reached the point in this project that my sons and I had been so anxiously awaiting. Our first big harvest! We’ve been waiting to try making our first cooked hot sauce with Sweet Heats and yesterday was the day. We had enough peppers that were ripe (or close enough) to take a stab at making a sauce. And so we did. Sweet Heat peppers, garlic, onion, salt, white vinegar. That’s it for ingredients. The peppers were sliced and sautéed in oil with the garlic and onion for 8 minutes. Then a cup of water was added and it all boiled for 15 minutes with the lid on the saucepan. Took it off the burner and let it cool to room temp. Then into the blender with the salt. As the blender puréed the mixture I poured the vinegar in slowly. I strained the purée through a fine mesh strainer, and then it went into our bottles. I love it. Great flavor with just the right amount of heat for the kids. That was my hope for the Sweet Heats from the start so I’m tremendously pleased with what we’ve got here.

This past Saturday I harvested about 30 peppers from these two plants. They all ended up in jars as part of a lacto-fermented hot sauce. We’ll see how that turns out in a few more weeks. Meanwhile the plants are looking pretty bare. There are just a few peppers left to ripen. With no new blooms in sight I think this project is nearing its end.

These plants have bushed out a bit since their last feeding but I’m not seeing many new blooms. I think they’ll be coming down this weekend. There will certainly be two more starting as soon as I move the other peppers outdoors (assuming the new seeds will sprout for me. 🙄).

Very nice production on these plants. After seeing their size at the current level of production, it looks like (with a bit of pruning towards the center), you'd be able to fit four plants in that same area. One in each corner. I'd definitely like to try it. That idea is now at the top of the list for my next grow in my 24" Farm.

These particular plants are spread out a bit more than they would have been because I (mistakenly) FIM'ed them early on. There was no need for that. Four Sweet Heats should grow well in a Farm, but the roots may need some pruning to let them all grow well.

These plants met their end on Saturday. They had a great run but I needed their space for the peppers I’m hoping to transplants outdoors next month.
I’d say I pulled around 70 peppers between the two plants. I’m pleased with this project and can’t wait to grow them again.
