There has to be a cheaper alternative for the pods and baskets!

I too save baskets after each project. With the exception of my pepper plants. Some of those the stalks and roots are so massive it ruins them. But flowers and herbs I save.
Pods on the other hand, I have never reused.

AG has them (baskets)on sale for a bit under $13.00 plus shipping for a bundle of 50.
I buy pod substitutes and knockoffs in a bundle off Amazon or Parkseed. I find that buying bulk saves a lot. That also goes for the nutrients. Those teeny weeny bottles are way over priced. Buying the large jug saves so much money in the long run.

Even the smallest 3D printers can make these.

That is great, dbosman!
I have so many of the AG and AG knockoff pods that I wouldn't need them. But for someone who is having to buy pods, that is a smart solution!

I've also kept the plastic AeroGarden baskets from previous plants because they're durable and easy to reuse. Just use an old toothbrush to clean them, it makes it so much easier. On the occasion I do toss some out if I'm too lazy or if the roots get too crazy, but that's also because I've collected too many at this point.
I haven't tried 3D printing baskets, but I did 3D print a few other things: - Pod caps to cover empty holes because the ones from AG are ridiculously expensive; this one off Thingiverse being my favourite.
- A water port cover for the Farm units which I recommend
- I also attempted a few of the caps with holes that wrap around the plant (the idea being to replace the need for the AG papers or something else like tin foil), but they weren't great since they didn't fit nicely on the AG baskets and none of them snapped together properly.
I don't reuse the pod sponges though. I mostly just buy a lot of those off Amazon. I've also tried the Urban Leaf knockoffs off Amazon (which are about a dollar cheaper in Canada) and those were great. Rockwool also works but it's not my favourite to work with (you have to cut it up and definitely have to block light with something like tinfoil otherwise algae will build up quickly).
