I can't seem to catch a break. First it was a chipmunk that ate all my radishes, then it was flea beetles attacking most of my leafy greens, then it was cucumber beetles attacking my zucchini and cucumbers, then the Japanese beetles came out and destroyed most of my basil (except thai basil) and chard... And now I find out that the latest pest in my yard is a rat :(
Oh, and not to forget the chinch bugs that have been destroying the lawn grass itself.

hakaku, gardening outdoors is always a battle, but it sounds like you have been hit especially hard this year.

Some have no problem at all....like my neighbor who just harvested a huge bunch of collards and offered to share. I just had my FIRST tom and was thrilled to pluck another. The raccoons actually left my garden alone over the weekend. My trash has at least a dozen gnawed and half eaten what-would-have-been-gorgeous tomatoes.I have tried sonic repellers, cayenne pepper,California Reaper pepper, irish spring soap and Critter Ridder granules...they just walk through it. All it has done is make me sneeze burn and itch! My garden guy said EVERYONE is complaining..especially of the holes the chipmunks are making all over. The critters are hungry and thirsty and will go to ANY lengths to eat. Do I have a remedy? No...misery loves company,I guess. Some of these worked in the past ...for a while...and then they discover there is no danger and become used to it. I wish I had a cure..netting and fencing is the only thing that really works.

I know that when birds eat tomatoes, they're only doing it because they're thirsty, so putting out a bird bath will prevent them from eating them. Maybe that might be worth trying for other animals?

I water every day and there is plenty of water around. A birdbath would heat up to boiling in this sun around here! No bird would venture near.
