I had never heard of the NuMex Sandia pepper until recently. That was when Jim Duffy sent me some Sandia seeds with a recent order. Those peppers resemble these peppers, but are thin walled. In researching the Sandia's, I found out about these Sandia Select seeds. This is a pepper that was designed to replace Hatch chilies as a hotter option. They are thick walled, and and a good sized pepper. The right plant is 6 inches shorter than the left plant and 8 inches from the light. Yet it has the longest pepper at 6 inches long and 1-1/2 inches wide. The longest on the left plant is 5-3/4" long and 1-3/4 wide. Both of these plants continue to generate new fatties and stuff them into every available millimeter of space. I had one of these get knocked off the plant by too much growth and not enough space to grow into. I have a feeling this variety will be a favorite of mine to grow in the future.

These are showing some unusual color changes. I expected to change black, first.

The NuMex Sandia Select peppers have been harvested and are now in the dehydrator. This was a wonderful project and I will grow them again soon.

Hi, I don't know if I did. In their green state, they taste very much like an Anaheim Pepper with a lot more heat. Ripe, they develop a subtle sweetness that makes them an excellent roasting pepper. I want to make a mole sauce, a thick gravy with onions and garlic to bring out the flavor of meats. The sweetness reminds me of dark chocolate, but only a hint. I would say the heat is about 9-10,000 SHU. This is a real winner.
