This isn't my kit, so I won't be able to report on the taste - I'm just growing it for a family member and will post pictures of it as it grows. This is the North Spore Golden Oyster Mushroom Kit - which should be as simple as opening the front of the box, cutting an X in the plastic, and spraying some water on it twice a day. I'll be posting pictures as it grows - I haven't grown any type of mushroom before, but it should take about two weeks before I can harvest it.

I love oyster mushrooms. Sometimes I find the white ones growing wild on trees in our woods. Always a lovely surprise.

I think mushrooms are one of those, love them or hate them kind of thing? I'm with Sher, I love them. There's so much one can do with them. And, they can be a nice "break" from meat too. I have an old lasagna recipe that uses finely ground mushrooms in place of ground beef. It is nice and doesn't leave you feeling stuffed. Added plus is that you can serve it to meat-eaters and vegetarians too and the meat-eaters don't seem to notice it isn't a traditional beef lasagna. I'll be following this one too! I don't think I'll try growing them, but it will be fun to watch. Thanks for sharing!!

campingcorgis, I made some awesome Hen of the Woods "bacon" one time. It really tasted like bacon.
I don't have the foggiest idea of what the recipe involved anymore, though.
Sorry, ERR0R1755, here I go hijacking your thread. I'll be good now. I promise!
Anyway, I am excited about your Golden Oysters!

Does it grow inside of a packet? It does! It initially comes in a plastic bag inside of a cardboard box - the directions said to remove the front of the box and cut an X into the packet. Sorry, ERR0R1755 , here I go hijacking your thread. I'll be good now. I promise! I don't mind the hijacking, it's still on topic

I LOVE mushrooms; I have often thought about growing them, but never have really explored. Will be interesting in following your progress!

Oyster mushrooms like cooler temperatures in the wild. They should thrive in your basement, clumsythumbs.

It doubled in size over night! I also swapped out the included mister / spray bottle with one of my own, since the one that was included tends to leak for me and the one I had sprays a finer mist.

If I were your neighbor, I would get a lot friendlier when they mature enough to pick! Or maybe work out a barter system.

If I were your neighbor, I would get a lot friendlier when they mature enough to pick! Or maybe work out a barter system. If you want to grow your own, go for it! They don't need light, they don't need warm temperatures, and they grow fast. The kit I got is $25, but if you know anyone who is growing mushrooms then you can get some spawn / used substrate from them and DIY it. This is the DIY tutorial that I will be following once the substrate in this kit is exhausted:

I had a Back to the Roots mushroom kit box thing that my parents gifted me for Christmas several years back. It worked REALLY well, and I got lots of mushrooms! It's like a recycled coffee ground substrate they put spore plugs in or something, but anyway, you'll be tickled with this kit. It's super easy and cool to see the progress. I was actually looking at kits again just a month or two ago trying to see if I could find something more long term (like an aerogarden but for mushrooms lol) and didn't really see what I had envisioned. Maybe I'll take another look :P
