My first day at the forum and about three weeks into sprouting seeds in my new Aerogarden Farm 24xl.
So far everything is working great and everything has sprouted. My outside garden is in a fenced-in cement area with EarthBoxes. I was wondering about transplanting the seedlings. I searched the forum for "transplant" and nothing came up.
Everything I read on the net talks about potting the seedlings, then gradually introducing them to the outside (hardening them to get ready to plant in the garden). I wondered if that's necessary. Once the seedlings were transplanted in JiffyPots, one still needs to take care of them.
Since the EarthBoxes take good care of plants, can't I take the farm tray outside to harden the seedlings and after that process, transplant directly into the EarthBoxes? That was my plan, but the more I read, I can't see where anyone else does it that way.
I see the first set of true leaves, so today was the first day I took the tray outside/shade for a few hours to begin the hardening process.
If my planned method is insane, please let me know.

Yes, you can definitely harden the plants off outside in the tray. I do.
Normally I wait until the plants have at least 4 true leaves. More is better., but I have had success with small seedlings if they are planted in good soil in a protected area.
You do run a small risk of bringing bugs indoors. But that is true whether you repot them or leave them in the tray.

Hello everyone, I’m The Flydiva, I recently picked up indoor gardening and now it’s become an obsession. I can’t seem to stop. I started with 1 harvest elite, I now have 3. I wanted to purchase the bounty but decided I’m all in so I ordered the Farm XL24. I wake up everyday looking forward to my plants progress. I’m growing cucumber, sugar snap peas, baby bell peppers, arugula, broccoli, kale spinach, cherry tomatoes, thyme, butter crunch lettuce, mint, Thai basil, salad greens and scotch bonnet pepper. I’ve eaten 3 salads out of it so far, and I’ve even taken some sprout outside. I do have a question on water... it says you can use tap water but not sure about that. I’ve been purchasing distilled water but I run through that so fast it’s ridiculous the amount of trips to the store. I have 5 gallon jugs I could get refilled with reverse osmosis water would this work? I look forward to this gardening journey with you guys...see you around!

I'd say you have the AG bug and have come to the right place. We are not called AeroGarden Addicts for nothing I love the Harvest units. They are nice and compact. I have one on my desk with flowers (with the exception of now since I am trying to figure out what I want to grow). I also have a Farm XL24 and the Farm Basic 24 on top of that. We look forward to hearing more as your gardens develop and hope to see some pictures too.
As for water. I think it depends on w here you live and the type of water you have. For me, I use regular tap water. I know some places have softened water and they should use distilled HOWEVER some still use tap and it is fine. I never bothered with the RO or distilled, I jumped in with regular. If you do a search on the forum for "reverse osmosis" you should find some posts that. We do have members that do use RO water however. Please keep us posted on how your gardens are doing. Ask any questions you may have and please jump in on any already started topic or create one of your own. I look forward to hearing from you again

Hi flydiva and welcome to AGA! I'm glad you found us and you'll feel right at home here, I'm sure. Lots of folks with the same obsession! Sounds like you have some great machines and some great things growing too! Please know that our AG's have some basic rules and guidelines, but things are rather fluid too, if you'll forgive the obvious pun. It is more of a trial and error or trial and success...LOL...kind of thing. I would lean towards doing a little experimentation with regard to the water. If you can, take one of the Harvests, maybe, and try it with tap water for a garden. Keep everything the same, except the water. If it doesn't seem to have any ill effects, then, there's your answer and life becomes a little easier? Just a thought. Is there a specific reason you have concern over your tap water? Does is smell of chlorine or something? Or maybe it isn't city water? Maybe you have a well and use a softener? I have a softener too, but I use Potassium instead of Sodium to soften the water. I do keep an eye on the plants and add Cal/Mag, if they seem to need it. That's one of the big things you'll need to do. Watch the plants and learn from them. They will tend to tell you, if & when there's a problem! In the meantime, read thru AGA and ask questions! You'll find a friendly bunch of folks, eager to share their experiences.

Hello All,
I've had Aerogardens since 2013. I used to be on Aerogarden Talk, so glad to be back in the mix. I've got 4 units now, just bought another Classic 7 (I know the addiction never leaves) to add to my original Classic 7 and 2 SpaceSaver 6's. I've used my units for everything, extra light/humidity for exotics being in the NE, cloning and even starting rice plants. I look forward to this season since I set up a 2 weeks ago. Again Hello and Happy growing everyone!!

Hello!
I'm from Central New York north of Syracuse and have been trying to come up with ways to grow my own produce w/o having to do this outdoors. I tried gardening the old-fashioned way a few years ago and produce thieves spoiled that for me.
So a few months ago I purchased a Tasty Sprout but am not having much luck with it. I tried growing heirloom lettuce but it didn't last long and grew kind of scraggly. Same thing with cherry tomatoes after that. I even tried growing green beans but that didn't work out. So I put this thing aside for a couple of months, trying to decide if I should keep trying.
I watched a video about how to grow green onions in my Aerogarden and set it up this afternoon. It looks like it will work but I have to ask - will my tiny apartment smell like onions?
I love green onions but don't want my apartment to smell bad.
If this doesn't work out, I may try lettuce again.
I would appreciate any advice that anyone has. Thank you!
Diana

I am going to try each piece of info separately. The lettuce, while many will grow and grow this, I along with others will only grow and harvest two or three times. I find that it can become leggy after that. It grows fast enough that I do not mind restarting it. Also lettuce likes cold water so if you find it is warm throw some ice cubes in the tank. Lastly, never harvest lettuce the day of of a couple days after feeding as it can taste bitter from the uptake of nutrients.
I am not a tomato grower but in a Sprout due to the wattage it can be slower but can also be grown. One of our tomato people can help answer this.
Onions.. are you talking bunching onions, chives, scallions? I grow scallions and only smell them when I cut them. It is not one that lingers.
Please take a look at the different sections and boards we have as there is a ton of information, help and tips. Please keep us posted on how you make out and ask any other questions you may have!

Shawn, Thank you for responding! I'll check out the different parts of the board that you suggested. I found this one last night. I'm trying to grow scallions. I noticed the onion smell after I put the cuttings in my Aerogarden. It seems much better now that it's been nearly a day. I probably should have gone with a larger unit but there was a special on the Tasty Sprout so I thought I'd give it a try. I may get a larger model if this doesn't work out.

Hello from NE Alabama. I went on Amazon this afternoon searching for a hydroponics system for herbs since our Newfoundland likes to mark everything with the wrong kind of water . I came across Moistenland Hydroponics Growing System and thought I would give it a try. I don't know how it happened but I ended up on the AeroGarden website AND there was a sale....need I say more? I ordered the Farm Plus 24 and I have 3 locations to consider....garage? sunroom? or laundry in the basement?
P.S. I now have a Christmas gift for my oldest daughter, a Moistenland Hydro System

Welcome passme. I am happy you found us. Congratulations on your Aerogardens. I love mine and I have had many units from the Sprout to my Farm XL 24. I think you will be happy with them as well. I have never seen or heard of the Moistenland system. I have seen other hydros but Aerogardens are far (my opinion) the best out there.
I look forward to hearing about what you plant and where you place your units. Please be sure to ask us any questions you have and jump in on conversations started or begin one of your own.
I can't wait to hear more from you.

Welcome, passme! You jumped into hydroponics with a big splash! And I think you picked the perfect Farm for a newbie. Not too short; not too tall!
And your daughter should LOVE her Christmas present!
Choosing the right location might be difficult. In the sunroom, the temperature would probsbly be hot in summer, and water that is too warm tends to grow root rot. If your sunroom is air conditioned, and you could keep the Farm out of direct sunlight, that would keep the plants where you could watch them grow an enjoy it most.
If your basement is too cool, summer crops like tomatoes and peppers would not be happy. You would need to stick to mostly salad greens to start. If you like that idea, and go to the basement often enough to keep a close eye on them that would be a good choice.
The temperature in the garage could easily get too hot or too cold, but some people do it.
I would pick the area where the temperature is easiest to regulate.
But I am NO EXPERT. We all learn as we go and different things work for different people.
Above all, enjoy your new Farm! And post lots of photos and progress reports.
We are so glad you joined us!

Hello passme and welcome to AGA! I started with a bounty and then purchased the Farm 24+ too. It is a great unit! As Sher stated, not too short, not too tall. You'll be able to grow a lot of herbs. One consideration I would gently suggest is that you'll likely want to have the herbs convenient to the kitchen. I know I go back & forth while cooking. I keep my AG's in what we call "the office"...but it is more of a garden room now... ! What herbs do you want to grow? Take a look at the Herbs discussions and at the Members Gardens too. You're sure to find a wealth of information! I've always wanted to visit Alabama! Our RV comes from there!

I decided to place it in the sunroom and it is air conditioned. The sunroom catches the morning sun but not directly and I have the blinds closed. I'll share some photos as soon as I have something to show. I'm so glad I found all of you.

It sounds like you chose the best spot, passme. The air conditioning makes all the difference!
I'm glad you found us, too!
Looking forward to the pictures!

This is the Moistenland system I found on Amazon for $69.35. I kept one of them to grow herbs and since it's smaller I set it up in the dining room. It is "ok" but the AeroGarden Farm is in a league of its own. I started some lettuce and a cherry tomato in the Farm. My basil, oregano and mint I took cuttings from our garden and the parsley and cilantro are from what I bought at the grocery. They really look sad....I think they were too far gone before I got the Moistenland system set up. I'm glad I found ya'll and I hope to have a bountyful.
