I'm experimenting with building sealed terrariums, which form their own ecosystem and require no additional watering or input (fertilizer, seeds, etc), with the exception of sunlight, once stabilized. Here is terrarium #1, started on March 2nd, 2021 in a 1.5L bottle. The layering consists of approximately 2.5in aquarium pebbles, an aluminum window screen cut to size, 0.5in horticultural charcoal, and 2.5in of my (fungus gnat attracting) Miracle-Gro potting soil. There is 3.5in of air space for plants to grow, with an additional 1.5in of space in a cone-like shape (available space shrinks as it approaches the outside of the bottle). To add micro-organisms and tiny insects, I've added some native soil and some water from a muddy puddle. I'm unsure how successful this will be due to the snow and ice, which may have killed everything in the upper layers that I collected from, so I may add more later. To the inside of the bottle, I added a clump of moss, half of a robin egg's eggshell, and a few Red Wonder Wild Strawberry seeds. So far, not much has happened. Condensation has collected on the inside of the bottle, and there is a small amount of water at the bottom. This is a sign of overwatering, so I am periodically opening the bottle to remove excess condensation until it clears up. Some seeds that were on or trapped in the moss have begun to germinate - those are almost guaranteed to be weeds, but it will be interesting to see what appears.

What a fun project! I saw my garden center had a terrarium section and have been thinking about the possibilities.

After everything I've done with AeroGardens, other hydroponics, and the occasional rare indoor plant - it's a bit nerve-wracking to be doing something like this where I am intentionally not keeping things clean.

LOL...focus on the experiment!? You come up with some great projects! Thank you for sharing them with us! Will follow this.

Terrarium #1 is doing well so far! I also added a piece of wood and glued a small decoration to it.

I bought a springtail colony, so I'll be adding some of those to this and future terrariums. I'm hoping to build another soon! Terrarium #1:

It's been quite a while since my last update, but here's a brief history of Terrarium #1: The terrarium did well for a while, but the plants eventually grew too tall and started to rot against the sides of the container, and algae took over in the soil since the sides were getting light as well. I may have given it too much water as well, which also caused issues, but now I can learn from what failed and give it another try. Welcome to Terrarium #2! This one is much smaller, but was set up in a similar way (layer of pebbles for drainage, window screen to prevent soil from falling down, layer of charcoal, layer of potting soil, springtails). I mixed in some tiny food scraps into the soil for nutrition, and added a layer of shredded leaves from outside as well as some pieces of bark. I added much less water than I did with the first terrarium, so no water is in the drainage layer at the moment. I also decided that I'll remove any other plants that appear, and try to keep it with just moss to make sure it stabilizes. The springtails seem happy!

Terrarium #2 is doing very well, the springtails are thriving and they are fun to watch:

Update on Terrarium #2: I thought it was dead since there has been a buildup of some brown growth, and the springtails have not moved in a long time. I opened up the container to check, and all of the springtails started running around again! I think there was an imbalance of oxygen to carbon dioxide - probably too much oxygen, since I noticed a tiny mushroom against the glass I'll leave it slightly cracked open for a while to see if that helps balance out the environment again.

How did the springtails get in there?

How did the springtails get in there? I added them when I first set up the terrarium - although it also seems like the eggs can last a long time in potting soil and will only hatch when the conditions are right. I have another soil plant experiment that I am doing, and the springtails (and a worm!) appeared out of nowhere in that bottle.
