Have been considering purchasing small plants from a nursery and transplanting them to my 3 inch krakty net cups.. to minimize the shock to the plant I was considering cutting the bottom completely out of the three inch net cup so that the plant roots slip right through to the water and then it's held up by the clay pellets.. does anybody have any thoughts on this type of an idea

I've done soil -> Kratky transplants before, but you have to be very careful to wash as much dirt off as you can or you risk running into root rot. I've found it helpful to add a bit of hydrogen peroxide into my Kratky container before I transplant as well, to try and kill off any soil bacteria that remain.
I did it a few times and found that it wasn't worth the hassle for me, so I went back to starting plants from seed. If you can get free plants that would otherwise be thrown out, and you don't want to plant them outdoors or keep them in soil, then it might be a good option. But if you're spending $2-$5 a plant, in my opinion it's not worth the risk.
