The basil mass got above the trellis, so I started harvesting with a haircut. It's been two days, and it is already starting to grow back. I noticed that underneath some leaves aren't growing from lack of light, so I'm not going to let it grow any higher.

August 17, 2021 Three days and it has fully grown back and then some!  It was plant food time this weekend too, so that helped. |

August 17, 2021 Tonight I was cooking up some steaks in a skillet, so when I was done, I sautéed an onion, deglazed the pan with sherry, and added a big pile of riced cauliflower and some peas along with some garam masala and turmeric. I simmered that for a bit, then added this nice pile of basil trimmed from my garden and cooked it in. It was great and super easy to make. This was five days worth of growth, so I'll be able to do this every week.  |

September 1st, 2021 Today was time to change water and add nutrients, so I took the opportunity to chop back my basil garden to the top of the trellis. I ended up with almost a quart of six types of basil. This is after trimming.  here's the tub of herbs...  |

More than double what I got last time.
This morning when the lights came on, I noticed that the top of the garden was glistening and every leaf looked happy. There were drops of water on all the cut stems. The plants are shlurping up all the nice new water. It's amazing how quickly they react to trimming and fresh water.

October 1st, 2020 A couple of weeks so ago my basil garden was due to be trimmed.  But I was busy (and lazy!) and let it go longer...  Then I got even more lazy and it started getting out of control. I can't believe how fast this grows!  I finally trimmed it. I got two packed tupperware containers full out of it.  This weekend is water change time. It should start exploding again in a week. |

I think it helps to plant all the same kind of plant together. They grow at the same basic rate and don't crowd each other out.

October 8, 2021 The same spot four days later and they tiny leaves are all over what looked like a butch haircut before.  The Thai Basil pops up with a flower once in a while, but I pick them off and eat them. They taste great. The rest of it doesn't have a chance to flower because I trim from the top every couple of weeks. |

Part of it is the kinds of basil I chose to grow. if I had it to do over, I wouldn't grow Genovese. It wants to be bigger than the AeroGarden. It grows tall with a long stalk that becomes a tree trunk. The others stay bushy which works much better.
