I have done something similar, but not nearly so drastic, with excellent results.

The two tomatoes in one of my gardens have reached 1 year old this week. They are still putting on lots and lots of tomatoes with little to no maintenance done.
Should I consider doing this massive prune of the plants and their roots?

Why stress the plant if it is doing what you want it to do.. But if you have 2, sounds like a really good experiment to do it to one and compare in 80 days!

I would not do it since your plant is happily producing good crops for you. I think his was more of an experiment to see what would happen.

Sounds like I should wait a bit....
If later they seem stressed, rather than dumping them I should probably consider a major pruning job on them...
I'll give them some more time in their garden............
Thanks....

Good plan! Once you get a tomato going so that it's producing good harvests, it's best to keep on doing what you've been doing. You can experiment if the plant looks like it needs something, or if you think you can improve the flavor.

I watched the full video earlier this morning, and am amazed that the tomatoes grew back so fast, and produced so many tomatoes, when he trimmed off so many roots! Does anyone know what kind of nutrients he uses? If not, I'll go through the Aerogarden Experiments list and see if he says something in a "growing tomatoes" video. I find it hard to believe that he got that quantity of tomatoes without using CalMag and/or something else to supplement the AG nutrients. At the very least, I think he would have to be adding more AG nutes than the amount recommended on the bottles/jugs.

lynnee, he often mentions AG nutrients, so I'm sure he uses them. I don't know if he supplements them.
