Today I snipped the grow tips of my DA's. They are about 20" tall and I don't want them any taller so we'll see how this works out. I still only have two blooms but they are both those "doubles."
I also didn't realize that the DAs are a yellow variety. I should learn to pay more attention to stuff.

I'm not really very pleased with my DA either. I harvested 3 ripe tomatoes and currently have about 8 more. The flowers are drying up and not producing anymore fruit. I expected a greater yield.

Add me to the "not thrilled with DA" list. This morning I discarded two green tomatoes that had blossom end rot. I snipped them off and added some calmag. If I don't see some positive results soon the DAs are headed for the compost heap and on to the next!
I'm also underwhelmed with the patio tomato plants I have in a Bounty. One plant has 2 tomatoes and the other one must think its purpose is to look pretty... not a single blossom.

I think we are all trying to find a couple of varieties of slicing tomatoes that grow well in an AG and have an abundance of full-size fruit. There is something that can't be defined, that isn't quantitative, that's elusive, that makes one variety take to the AG and another variety shun it.
Eliminating the duds seem to be the only way to find the diamonds.
FWIW, the only full-size (although a bit small) tomato that I grew that I was really happy with was my first attempt. It was a yellow tomato called a yellow TAXI tomato. I would grow it again.
Has anybody grown any varieties in the past that you would consider successes and would grow again?

scarfguy, I'm still looking for a prolific slicer that likes the AGs, too. Were you the person who had some success with Early Girl? What is the slicing tomato that you want to try in one of your pepper gardens? I'm not giving up on the Dwarf Awesome if it grows some new lower branches. It's the closest I've come to having a healthy slicing tomato plant in my AGs. All of the others have required transplanting outdoors before they would produce tasty tomatoes in halfway decent quantities. Perhaps the DAs need more nutes?

I have not tried the Early Girl. It is on my short list. So are the Bush Champions I and II.
I was gonna try that Homeslice somebody else is trying. I can't tell how big the tomatoes are though.

Today I lopped another branch off the Dwarf Awesome because it was touching the lights again. However, I detected some new shoots starting lower down. Fingers crossed!

The Dwarf Awesome got an R&R today, and everything looked healthy. Unfortunately, I gave it a double dose of Cal-Mag (10ml, was thinking about the Farms). We'll see what happens. The leaves look a trifle stressed, so maybe it will be a good thing. The three DA tomatoes are getting bigger since I topped the plant.

The Dwarf Awesome is still going well. I topped it again, which seems to have helped the development of a fourth tomato near the top of the plant (second photo below, closeup). At Day 81, one of the three big tomatoes is finally "breaking orange", so I could let it ripen on the kitchen countertop. However, it's sharing a stem with another tomato, so I don't want to try harvesting it until the other is harvestable. I still want to know whether the plant will produce new blooms on new lower branches. The plant is remarkably "on schedule", as the seed developer says it's 80 days to harvest. I think that I moved the seedling at least once. victoryseeds.com/products/dwarf-awesome-tomato

The Day of Reckoning! As beautiful on the outside as scarfguy's Dwarf Awesome, but with hard, black, seed-like thingies on the inside, instead of the green seed areas. aerogardenaddicts.com/post/61750/threadMaybe mine is slightly overripe? Does anyone have any idea what the black thingies might be? I removed the black thingies (a good idea because the one I missed in my slice was definitely inedible). Husband the tomato-lover and I the low-acid-tomato-lover both pronounced this a delicious tomato! Definitely I'm going to continue planting these, assuming I can develop a "bonsai" method of pruning that will hold them to 36" whle continuing to produce.

I didn't see any black seeds in mine but that link is good information.
I ate 3 of the DA tomatoes. I terminated it and it had 6 more ripe tomatoes. I froze those to go with some frozen san marzano tomatoes. When I collect enough, I'll make an "all day sauce".

Thanks so much for telling us about the Dwarf Awesome, scarfguy! It's definitely my kind of tomato. Can't wait for the other four to ripen!

The Dwarf Awesome has some blossoms at the very top of the plant that were touching the lights two days ago. I tied the vertical stalk down so that it was pointing towards the rear, alongside the light pole, in hopes that the flowers would have room to produce fruit. (I'd already taken the topmost leaves and growing tips off the plant.) The plant has other ideas! Those blooms are growing straight up again. It'll be a highly interesting project, figuring out how to shape a Dwarf Awesome into a producing 36" plant in a Farm! I'll get this started before long.

Let me introduce you to another variety from the Australian Dwarf Tomato Project, the group that developed the Dwarf Awesome:
This is one of the smallest varieties in the project at only 18-24 inches. It is a golden roma type. Although a roma is usually thought of as a sauce tomato, I like to slice them and put them in salads. (Guess I've spent too much time at Olive Garden. They use romas in their salads).
ANYWAY, this is called Banana Toes. I've also seen it listed as "Baby Toes" and, I think, "Banana Legs" is the same variety but not sure.
Here's where I got it:
This has been growing for 46 days. It has robust growth. It's about 19 inches tall, profuse flowering, and starting a few tomatoes.
