Just ordered Autumn Star Kalettes seed from Jung Seed. They are a cross between kale and Brussel Sprouts, growing like little heads of kale on the stalk… very cute! I’ve been waiting to get them at a decent price.. they are hard to get here in the states, but much easier in England since they were developed in Europe. I only found them here at Jung and Territorial. I’m going to start them in an AG and transplant some outside for a fall/winter crop but leave some in the AG farm xl. I’m excited to see how they turn out.

That sounds like an interesting mix! Should be fun to watch those grow!

patlab, Just when you thought there was nothing weirder-looking than a stalk of Brussels sprouts, somebody comes up with little kales on a stalk! Do post photos if you can!

Well my Kalettes aren’t growing exactly as expected. The little Kalettes are supposed to grow on the stalk like Brussels Sprouts. I have a couple growing out the top so I removed most of the large leaves on the stalk (will use like kale) and I do see a bunch of little buds above each leave stem joint. Fingers crossed!

The Kalettes -- I remember them from back in the 50s. Dottie, Janet, Ginny and Alice Mae. They had some cover hits -- Mr. Materman (Mr. Materman, bring me some greens . . . ) and Broccoli Rabe (Broccoli Rabe, Broccoli Rabe, Oh Broccoli, Broccoli, Broccoli, Broccoli . . . ) -- if I recall correctly.

I think you mean the Chordettes!
but, damn, Clovis Sangrail, if you remember them, you must be older than dirt (like me).

but, damn, Clovis Sangrail , if you remember them, you must be older than dirt (like me). Chordetttes, Kalettes . . . Tomato, tomahto . . . . I just had the wrong songs, so I fixed them. 'Mister Materman, bring me some greens (bom, bom, bom, bom), Make them the freshest that I've ever seen . . . .' And of course, who can forget 'Broccoli Rabe, Broccoli Rabe, Oh Broccoli, Broccoli, Broccoli, Broccoli . . .' Who here remembers St. George and the Dragonet? And 'Istanbul was Constantinople, now it's Istanbul not Constantinople . . .'

I remember the Istanbul song.
If you haven't heard of them, Clovis Sangrail, check out a couple of more modern groups:
The wiyos
The squirrel nut zippers

I had not heard of them, so I checked them out. They kind of remind me of the old skiffle bands. especially the Wiyos with that bass and washboard. If you like skiffle, Van Morrison has a good skiffle double CD set -- Moving on Skiffle
And just to get things back on track with the original topic -- These are all good tunes to listen to while you eat your kalettes.

ALSO... while eating your kalettes, check out the version of Mr. Sandman by the Puppini Sisters.
I also listen to: Caro Emerald Corey Harris & Henry Butler (they only did 1 album together, it's excellent!) Dave Gross (baritone sax no less) Saffire - The Uppity Blues Women (and Ann Rabson solo albums)
I listen mostly to honky-tonk piano when I'm working. Keeps me moving.

Interesting but I won’t grow these inside again. Took too long to grow the Kalettes and not much produce. Also took up too much space.
