Anybody tried growing chervil. It's also known as French parsley.
I've tried it 3 or 4 times now without success. The seeds germinate just fine and the seedling grows to about an inch. THEN, over a day or two, it gets leggy and falls over and then the new growth turns absolutely black and shrivels up. I'm growing it in a harvest with 2 other varieties of parsley and they are doing fine.
Can't figure out what's going wrong???

Isn't that consistent with having the water supply cut off when the seedling falls over? Have you tried fashioning a little trellis to support the stems? You can do this with bendable plant wire. I did this with radishes. Cherry Belle Radishes With Trellises

I propped it up with a cocktail stick but it was too late. The last time I tried it. It grew to about 3 inches tall and then the new growth just turned black and dried up. It didn't fall over that time.

Back to the basics then! Too much water Too little water Too much light Too little light Too much fertilizer Too little fertilizer Drafts Temperature Hmm. Maybe too much light, scarfguy? Someone on Reddit had a similar problem, but no solution. link

lynnee , I didn't think to take a picture. The seedling doesn't wilt like you'd expect.
After the first set or two of leaves come out normally, the next set quickly turn absolutely black and are dry and crispy. It's like they are burnt? or perhaps a fungus of some kind. Maybe it's fertilizer burn? I just used the standard 8ml of AG nutes at startup. Maybe chervil seedings are very sensitive to nitrogen?
Maybe I'll experiment with a harvest full of just chervil seeds. THANKS!

scarfguy, maybe they ARE burnt? Have you tried raising the light higher? The grow area can get pretty warm under a Bounty lamp at its lowest position. Also, a draft from a fan or window or vent can make the leaves on a mature plant crispy. Did you look at the Reddit link? That person got black leaves after adding nutes and hydrogen peroxide.

OH... I missed your link, thanks. YES, the pic on the reddit link is exactly what it looks like.
I also added nutes and hydrogen peroxide. I don't think the guy in the reddit link ever got a solution.
BUT... my use of nutes and hydrogen peroxide is no different than the concentrations I always use for all my seedlings. If that is it, the chervil must be very sensitive.
As for light, they were growing in a harvest XL with the light about 7 inches from the deck.

Bet it's the nutes or the hydrogen peroxide! That guy had a healthy plant before.

I grew it once, it was in garden of primarily lettuces.
I'll copy/paste from my log for your entertainment. Gosh I was wordy!
I did snip out a few bits about my outdoor garden that weren't relevant. Also, though there are pictures in the document, I didn't keep the original JPGs, as I was on an older computer and running out of drive space, sorry!
Aerogarden 7 Classic
Planted 4/3/2010: Various Paris Market Mesclun Mix seeds including chervil (Renee's Gardens), plus a pod each of Park Romaine Winter Density (green) and Romaine Marshall (dark red).
Growing medium: Park sponges, plus a couple foam sponges.
Nutrients: GH Flora Series liquid nutrients
Note 1: Started with distilled water, but will switch to tap water for growing. Note 2: Starting nutrient mix = .25 tsp of Grow, Bloom & Micro Note 3: Since I don't know what each seed is, except for chervil, I labeled my pods according to what the seeds looked like. Maybe I'll figure it out!
This should be a better attempt at this garden... the last time I tried, my cat Luna ended up ruining half the garden by first playing with it, then laying on it.
4.5.2010 Sprouts in everything but the chervil pod!
4.6.2010 Removed bio-dome from suspected Arugula pod.
4.11.2010 Two sprouts so far in the chervil pod. The little lettuces are growing, but slowly at this point. The arugula pod looks rather boisterous in comparison.
4.13.2010 Picture Day! The sprouts are growing AND drinking a bit! I topped off with some 1-1-1 mild growth solution. (Sorry, don't have the old pictures still, they are just in the Word document.)
4.17.2010 Everything is growing! I am seeing some slight leaf curling on the romaine Marshall, so I may cut back and go to a 1-.5-.5 mix. I'll see how things go. The romaine Winter Density is not showing any signs of that.
4.19.2010 EC 0.5. The curling may be stopping on the romaine Marshall, but I do believe when I am out of the 1-1-1 mix, I will switch the ratio to 2-1-1. And do a drain & refill. The arugula doesn't look entirely happy with the current mix either. Though the Winter Density is just looking lovely! That seems to be a very nice and easy variety of romaine for both outdoors and the Aerogarden. I will buy that seed again!
4.22.2010 Things are looking good, I should be able to cut my first leaves tomorrow. The chervil is behind the lettuces since it was the last to sprout, but I expect it to catch up soon.
4.25.2010 I didn't cut any leaves early, but I can now, the plants are bigger and it would probably be a good idea to have a bit of salad tonight. I did a drain and refill today and the plants have been switched to a 1.5-1-.5 mix. EC 1.1.
4.26.2010 FIRST HARVEST! I got more greens than I expected, once I started really looking closely at the plants. They definitely needed a bit of thinning. I was careful not to take too much from any one plant but got a nice large pasta bowl full of arugula, green romaine, red romaine, red oak leaf, frilly endive, regular endive and just a couple snips of chervil. I added a few snips of dill from the upstairs herb garden. I opted for simple, with a few walnut pieces on top and dressed with a half teaspoon of flax oil and a half teaspoon of apricot vinegar. That was a lovely, lovely salad! All the greens were very tasty together!
4.27.2010 I raised the lamp hood one notch.
4.28.2010 EC 0.8. pH 5.5. Added two pipettes of pH UP.
4.30.2010 2nd Harvest! About 43g of lettuce this time. As I harvested about the same for chard, both hubby and I had nice breakfast salads. We shared a single ripe AG red heirloom tomato. Made about three small bites for each of us.
5.5.2010 3rd Harvest! EC 1.0. Mixed up some more 1.5-1-.5 mix. This was a HUGE harvest! The romaine Winter Density and the oak leaf lettuce and arugula were particularly productive. I think the frilly endive in back has been crowded out a bit, it's small, but maybe now it will get a bit of a chance to breathe and grow. Several nice large leafs from both the endive and red romaine Marshall, though that lettuce is looking more "bolty" at the moment. The Marshall lettuce does not get as quite as dark red in the AG as it does outside. The Lamp hood lowered a notch after harvest. Got 100g worth... enough for two large, pasta bowl filling salads.
5.14.2010 EC 1.0. Harvested two large pasta bowl salads... approximately 100g, though I didn't bother to weigh it this time, as I also needed to harvest some chard. So my fridge became full of salad bowls today, LOL! Fortunately, I eat a lot of greenery. Had one with breakfast, will probably have another shortly. The problem is compounded by the fact it is farmer's market day and I brought home greens from there too!
5.19.2010 EC 1.0. I can see the end is getting near... lamp hood is up all the way and the lettuces are starting to get viney. Hopefully the garden can continue producing for a few weeks yet.
5.26.2010 About 150g for the last harvest. The lettuce has officially bolted... OK, it wasn't actually producing flowers, but some of the lettuce was starting to get tough. And it had just about "vined" out of control. Stuff was flopping everywhere. The chervil and arugula are still going, but it's clear the arugula is also near the end. Time to start thinking about cleaning it out and planting another garden. May give it a few days yet, so I can keep harvesting arugula and chervil.
5.27.2010 Got the last bits of arugula. Sanitized all the baskets but the chervil that is still going. Have a thing of cat grass on the rest of the deck currently.
6.4.2010 The chervil, no longer crowded by lettuce has absolutely gone nuts! I'm going to use some in salads and then see if I can possibly transplant it outside. I'd like to replant the garden, but I sure hate to kill off the chervil, since I love it!
7.8.2010 Chervil is still going and is now a rather bushy looking affair. I just haven't had the heart to kill it. I Googled and apparently it has a long tap root and does not transplant well. It also prefers cool conditions, which would NOT be outside right now! I'd like to get the garden back in lettuce. OTOH, chervil is great on my steamed veggies. Maybe I'll just harvest as much as I can over the next several days and call it quits.

Interesting that the Chervil took off once it was alone in the AG! I love the note about your cat killing your sprouts by lying down in the AG, pfunnyjoy!

Interesting that the Chervil took off once it was alone in the AG! I love the note about your cat killing your sprouts by lying down in the AG, pfunnyjoy ! She was a total plant killer. Could not leave any green thing alone. Technically, that room was off limits to her, but she snuck in and had a field day. So far, so good with the two boys, but they might be more destructive when the weather goes cold and they can't go out. That's a wait and see. But they haven't bothered either of the two kitchen gardens so far and they aren't allowed in my office.
