I tried to search the forum on 'hatch', but mostly what I got was posts about disgusting things hatching in people's gardens, so I figured a new discussion was in order.
Has anyone grown Hatch chilis in an AG?
Do Hatch chilis even grow in an AG?
Will they grow in an apartment in the Midwest, or do they need to be in the Hatch Valley, where they can bask in the warmth of the the desert sun and soak up the rattlesnake venom?
If so, any particular variety you would recommend?
I have two Bounty basics that I am going to be cleaning out in a couple of days. Will these work?
One or two plants per basic? I know now not to stuff it full of four or five.
Thanks.

Have you seen Hatch seeds sold anywhere? I have wanted to try these too. I figure worst case is I move them outside if they don’t do well.

Have seen many pictures right here at AA to verify different types of peppers will grow in hydro. They like it warm and plenty of light. I have never tried to Grow Hatch Peppers inside or outside in the Midwest. I am in sw Mi. and grow many peppers mostly outside. I bet they will grow for you. Never hurts to give it a try.

Technically, unless you're in the Hatch valley, you're not growing Hatch chiles. They're like Champagne.
I've grown Big Jim green chiles in AG before and they did okay. They would have done much better if I hadn't been away from home so much, they didn't get the care they deserved.

Thanks, everyone. The ones I grew last year in a raised box sure looked and smelled and tasted like Hatch chilis, which they would do no matter what I called them. But that was in the Nevada desert with some of that square-foot garden Mel's mix (1/3 peat, 1/3 vermiculite and 1/3 compost). You could shove a drum stick in that stuff and it would sprout. And now I'll be trying in the Midwest with no soil at all. So we shall see how it goes. I ordered a packet of those Chili Revival Big Jim's, and I'll try one or two in a Bounty. maskedsonnet -- How tall did your Big Jim's get? And what did you plant them in?

I planted mine in a Farm XL, just one plant. I get bad problems with edema anytime I try to do more than one pepper or tomato plant to a farm, but you may have better ventilation than I do. Iirc it got nearly all the way up to the lights and I had to trim it a bit.
