Besides volunteers this will be the first planted section in the garden. The whole area is for potatoes. That should be about 10 rows. The best spuds are grown in Michigan. It must be the soil. A baked potato will take at least 90 -120 minutes to cook in the oven because they are very dense. Even boiling them takes forever. They do soften up after 3 months or so. Usually we have ample supply till they start growing eyes jan/feb .. Then we save those for planting like this year. Took about half a day to till that ground. Well worth the time. Next area will be for veggie's. Might not even till it. We shall see how workable it is a few weeks before planting. The entire garden is fenced in because everything likes eating from the garden. The deer jump right over the 6 foot fence like it's there job. I think we lost all our sweet corn to them 2 years ago. The rabbits and other smaller animals go between or underneath but , for the most part the fence helps. Gonna try to grow sweet corn again this year as I have purchased a deterrent. Hopefully it works. Orbit 62100 Yard Enforcer Motion-Activated Sprinkler with Day & Night Detection. www.amazon.com/dp/B009F1R0GC?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1 20240407_123415

LoveSalads, your photo makes me nostalgic about growing up in the Midwest! Nobody has yards or lots like yours in the Bay Area.

LoveSalads , your photo makes me nostalgic about growing up in the Midwest! Nobody has yards or lots like yours in the Bay Area. Indeed I used to live in San Fernando Valley Woodland hills Ca so I completely understand about lot sizes in densely packed areas. I worked for a company based in Livermore for 25 years so am familiar with your general area. I miss the weather but love the room to roam here.

I don’t have that kind of space either. I just have raised beds and Earthboxes. You would be amazed how much produce comes out of one Earthbox. I have also had good luck growing potatoes in grow bags! I have sweet potatoes growing on my kitchen counter and plan to put the slips in grow bags when they are ready.

Oh my! Do you have any plans for deer repellant? I read somewhere that they don't like oleander. No worries about poisoning them, because they won't touch it, according to the article I saw.

As my wife would say, "OH DEAR!"... or is that, "OH DEER!" Early in the year it was "OH S!@#$ DEER" , one of those ran into me then ran off. Car ran fine but , 4K or so later to make the car pretty again and I didn't even get dinner out of the deal. 20240313_1454051

Fence inside of fence. Some of the hazards of growing outdoors. The Broccoli is planted and hopefully semi protected. I have a trail camera on the taller fence to catch and act on any culprits. 20240428_143048a fence The Sugar snap peas and the neighbors peas are starting to pop up. Will be a challenge to keep the fence line clear of grass/weeds. When they get taller I will mulch something at the fence line.

I'll bet you needed a crane, LoveSalads! That "planting one at a time" photo made me tired just to look at it. What a wonderful vegetable garden you have started! I like the creative cucumber trellis in particular.

My outdoor garden is coming along and my cukes are abundant. I made Sarah’s bread and butter pickle recipe over the weekend and they are the best pickles I have ever had. Thank you for sharing this amazing recipe!
I have a couple of tomatoes starting to ripen, a couple of peppers and green beans ready to pick!!

Thank you for sharing this amazing recipe! I have a couple of tomatoes starting to ripen, a couple of peppers and green beans ready to pick!! That sounds awesome. I would love to see many pictures. Do you have a free flickr account ¿ As you can see I won't have much to pick from the garden for a few months except the broccoli. After that gangbusters and giving alot away at the side of our little road. Hopefully at least half of what I planted thrives and produces some good fruits n vegetables.

Rut Ro........... Wonder what the rabbit is thinking bout........ufffffffffffff Digital Camera Rabbit Made it through the big fence of course ,hopefully won't dig under the chicken/rabbit wire. Might have to dig out the deterrent to see if it can pick up rabbits. I was hoping just to use that for the future sweet corn.
