2024-10-08: Day 0
Seeds: Parris Island Cos (Baker Creek) Aerogarden: Harvest Elite Slim Location: North 40 (office) Water: tap Grow Medium: AG sponges Preferred pH: 6.0–7.0 Preferred EC: 1.4–1.8
Nutrients: Maxigro 2.5g CalMag 1.0ml
Nutrient mix PH: 6.5 Nutrient mix EC: 0.9
3 pods planted, 3 seeds per pod, 2 deep, 1 on top. I had some AG pods of this variety, but not a single one ever sprouted. Here's hoping for better luck with the Baker Creek seeds!

Last night, in anticipation, I looked at my newly planted, ONE DAY OLD, Parris Island pods and all three had action going!
I couldn't believe it! But I looked again this morning, in case I was imagining things last night, and there's definite germination action. So I'm hoping for sprouts in the very near future.
Two are seeds planted on top or close to the top of the sponge, so I have to wait and see if those roots in successfully. But one pod has action down deep.

Day 7
Thinned the plants down to one per pod. I know you don't have to, but I've never been a huge fan of multiple plants per pod for lettuce.

2024-10-19: Day 11 The little lettuces are growing and looking nice, except the middle one which has a bit of yellow edging to one leaf. pH is fine, EC is fine, rinse and refill is due in just a few days, so I'm inclined to leave be until then, unless I see any drastic worsening.
They are getting a little bit of fan breeze both morning and evening.

2024-10-22: Day 14Rinse and refill. Switched over to Ionic Grow. The little lettuces are coming along. Thinned to one plant per pod. 1.0ml CaliMagic 9.0ml of Ionic Grow 5.0ml of 3% hydrogen peroxide pH: 7.0, adjusted with pH Down to hopefully hit 6.0. EC: 1.3

2024-10-30: Day 22A small side salad coming up tomorrow with some Tatsoi and a few cherry tomatoes from the now-defunct volunteer tomato (we had a hard freeze). Had to get a photo of these pre-harvest, they are looking so lovely!

2024-11-05: Day 28Rinse and refill! My anticipated salad was delayed because I got sick, and the lettuces NEEDED harvesting today! Ended up with 60g, a nice handful of leaves! Made a large, pasta-bowl-sized salad, added a few Tatsoi leaves, and some watercress, along with onion, cherry tomatoes, and sardines. Some growth into pump filter, not bad, did a little trimming. Have raised the nutrients, had a tiny amount of leaf-edge yellowing, so more Cal/Mag and overall, time for an adult plant dose. Raised the lights slightly. Nutrients: 2.0ml Cal/Mag 15ml Ionic Grow 5.0ml 3% food-grade hydrogen peroxide pH: 6.0 EC: 1.5 After the harvest trim:The salad:

You planted 3 seeds per pod. Did you notice if it was the deep ones or shallow ones that germinated? I planted 2 seeds per pod - both shallow and none have germinated yet. I put 2 pods each in my Harvest 360. Little Gem Red Sails Paris Island The red sails is looking the best so far.

Unfortunately, I don't remember, but I suspect most were planted deep, as I just try to get seeds into the sponge holes and those were likely what germinated. I'm growing some AG mystery lettuce (or trying to) and I have been peeking in the pods, it appears that AG plants the lettuce seeds on the deep side if that helps. I've only got sprouts in two of 4 pods I have planted, and one sprout looks like a weakling.

I think my weakling sprout might have been a shallow one. At any rate, unless I know a seed doesn't like to be planted deep in a sponge, I just aim for the holes. I feel like my weakest sprouts have usually happened from seeds that were laying near the top of the sponge. Anyway, my mystery lettuce pods are looking mostly like a bust. I exchanged the one that had a healthy sprout for the non-sprouting one in the arugula/lettuce garden. And it's looking like I'll be doing something else with the Harvest 360 that was attempting to sprout AG mystery lettuce. It's day 7 and no action other than the one weak sprout. Cilantro, maybe.

How old were the Mystery Salad Green pods? I found a bunch of old herb pods in a box yesterday and stuck them in my Idoo on the kitchen counter. Time will tell if anything comes up. Added some fresh chive seeds to the chive pods and I found some Parsley that wasn’t too old so threw extra seeds in the parsley pods. Figured the basil would come up even if it’s old and didn’t have any new seeds to add to the other pods.

So there's no telling at all. Certainly, they don't seem fresh, since currently I have one happy sprout out of 4 pods planted. It appears to be a red-tinged lettuce, so I'm happy about that! Meanwhile, I harvested a nice big handful of leaves from my little Romaine plants from my own seeds tonight, plus gave hubby a few nice leaves for a "side salad." They are now enjoying some fan time. I've some more Gourmet Herb kits from the last two open box units I got on eBay. I've ordered some Kratky lids for mason jars and may experiment with growing some that way. I'd like to try mint, for instance, in a jar all by itself. Maybe a Kratky watercress from a cutting.

None of my Herb seeds I found in a box have come up yet but it is still early days for these. One is truly a mystery as Aerogarden had it labeled as Holiday Parsley. On the other hand my Paris Island hasn’t come up yet in my Harvest 360. Stuck a few more seeds in the pods a few days ago. These shouldn’t be that difficult as the seeds were just purchased. If they don’t come up I may just reorder from Bakers Creek since your as doing so well.

If your seeds don't sprout, you can always try a shallow planted pod. I was looking at my 3 Baker Creek lettuces tonight down in the basement, I have action in two pods, but not in the third. I might move the pods more central. I have been just being lazy and putting them where I want them to end up, but it occurred to me yesterday when I planted the mizuna that it might be best to group stuff where the light is strongest, then move once they sprout. However, being lazy, other than doing so with the mizuna, I left the lettuce and kale gardens be.

Hopefully the Holiday Parsley germinates so we can see what it is. I did have one old pod germinate but not sure what it is yet. 2 of my pods had the labels loose in the package. One label is parsley and the other is basil. I figured once they were up I would know which is which.

The question is which would be designated as "holiday"? You won't have any trouble telling between parsley and basil. I just found some more mystery green pods, hopefully the last of them, and stuck them in the Bounty with my other Baker Creek lettuces to see if they germinate. I also stuck in an AG Gourmet Herb mint pod for the same purpose. I'll move that to a Kratky mason jar setup if it sprouts. I think I need to put some more seeds in one of the Baker Creek lettuce pods, no action in that pod so far. I might give it another day or two.

Holiday parsley?
Sounds like something Willie Nelson or Tommy Chong might sell.
