I am just starting my tomato seeds in the AeroGarden seed starter tray. Usually, you cover the newly planted seeds with the plastic cups but this did not come with any and the plastic cover that came with it does not fit on the planting bed...no room for the light pole. And I don't have near enough plastic cups and they are too big, made for the 9 pod not 50 pod seed starter? Am I doing something wrong?

Try covering it with saran wrap maybe? Punch a few holes in the blank spots? Com to think of it I do not know if my seed starters came with plastic covers.

I used to have(and still have one for my ss6)seed starters and the domes are not used with the seed starting.

So the seeds remain uncovered? Seems like a not "moist" enough environment? I live in a very dry area.

Nope. No domes come with the seed starter unit. ...and you never know until you try it and see if it is suitable for where you live. Give it a go!

From AeroGarden customer service:
The clear plastic tray is packaging and you are correct- the 50 seed starting system does not need to be covered.

If your atmosphere is dry, I think it will still work because I have grown projects w/o domes in my regular machines with success. The gas heat in my house makes the air very dry(I am the queen of skin and hair moisturizers LOL!) And still the AHG's will work perfectly w/o the domes. Dare to experiment!

We actually bought Humidifiers for two rooms because it is so dry here as well. I too have my fair share of moisturizers

Beasley I have often wondered about this myself, because I’ve used the seed starters a number of times, in different machines. Nearly all of them germinated anyway, contrary to what made sense to me. I probably don’t have as naturally dry an environment as you in terms of our weather, but our a/c is nearly constantly on, year round.
And, interestingly, some of the sponges in my new Sprout seed starter have just developed white fuzz on top. Go figure.
