I found an old unopened packet of Endive Clodia from Johnny’s Seeds and planted them the other day. (For now they’re in my seed starter, pic when they have their forever home in a Harvest.). I tried to look it up but that kind of endive is not on their site anymore. I did find it a couple other places, but it’s not the Belgian endive that I probably thought I was buying. It looks more like a curly loose leaf and is said to be in the chicory family, so kind of bitter. I am guessing it was one of those impetuous sale buys for $1 or so. We shall see how it does hydroponically!

Mary has a knack for trying out unusual projects and that makes it interesting and fun! Would you believe I have never even TASTED endive and Kolrabi?

I’m right there with you on the kohlrabi, I’ve never tasted it before, to my knowledge. As to the endive, I don’t know that I’ve had this kind of endive before, but I think it’s like frisée which I have had. If it is, I will use it to make my husband’s favorite French salad with lardons, the one with the poached egg on top. He goes nuts over that salad! I just have to find good lardons.

Burgeoning Endive! I must say that I’m pleased with the germination rate of my older seeds lately.

Maybe I need to see if I have old Cilantro Seeds but I think I got rid of those. As you said the older seeds germinated faster at the time.
Anyway, back on track. Happy Dance, Endive in your furture.

I transplanted the 6 endive to a tall machine (because that’s what I have) plus a cilantro. Added low dose of 2.5 tsp Ionic nutes. However, since it’s a bitter green, I’m considering transplanting it to an EarthBox Jr outside, and transplanting the snow peas here instead. Aside from this machine I only have 2 machines left.😱

Suddenly bigger. Still considering transplanting outside given that it’s the proper season, and I can free up a machine. Maybe for the cukes...!!! But, I have to have the EB that I already paid to be prepped is soon prepped correctly...

I should snip off one of the larger leaves and taste it. I’ve never had it before.

I finally decided to transplant these outside. I needed the machine for the herbs that were not getting along with the Sweet Heat in the same garden. I tasted a frond, and yup, it’s a bitter green, exactly like an Endive should be. Had great texture too with those deeply fringed leaves. It will go nicely with some other strong flavors that can stand up to it. I’m thinking of a wonderful salad I had at my favorite Italian restaurant in SF that had radicchio (same chicory family), pancetta, gorganzola and a lovely vinaigrette heavy on the olive oil to round out the punch of flavors. Mmm. (Oh, and in the foreground is the outdoor kohlrabi to compare to the AG kohlrabi.)
