In the process of taking down my lettuce garden and moving the Farm Plus for hurricane prep I noticed that the pump in one of the units was broken. I suspect that I missed it in the excitement of setting it up. The top of the pump that connects to the spout going up to the deck was almost entirely separated from the main pump housing. When I touched it to inspect it separated completely. The problem I have now is that the top part of the pump is stuck in the spout, and I assume that a new pump doesn’t come with a new spout piece for the Farm. I’ll try to call AG customer service on Monday. In the mean time I don’t want to break the spout in trying to pull the pump piece out if it isn’t meant to come out. Can anyone confirm that it should?

Oh gosh, I don’t know enough to say. What a bummer. If I had to hazard a guess, I’d say your suspicions are correct. And yes, new pumps do not come with a new black spout/tube. But under the circumstances the company should send you a new one of those, too.

I should add, though, that if the pump is still able to create some bubbles or a mini fountain to oxygenate the water, you can still grow plants in the meantime even though the water isn’t able to circulate through the deck. They might grow slower but they’ll still be ok.

If you can use pliers or a needle nose to pull that white piece out without damaging the black part. Do you have any spare pumps? And yes call AG, they should replace them for you.

If I could get to my pliers right now I’d definitely give it a try. Unfortunately my garage is packed with all of our patio furniture, grills, etc. because of the hurricane. 🙂
Good to know that bubbles are enough but I don’t think I’ll start anything there until I get it replaced. That does help me make sense of why the lettuce in that unit still did well though.
With all of my new Farms finally shipping this week (supposedly) I’ll have plenty of plants to get started anyway. And I still have the other unit. Guess it’s time to get something new growing in there!

What new plants are you considering? This is always a fun stage (for me, at least).

What new plants are you considering? This is always a fun stage (for me, at least). In the two new Farms I’m going plant lettuce and herbs. I’ll be planting some of the green Salad Bowl lettuce that came so highly recommended here. I’ll also use a few of the pods for basil, cilantro, and parsley. With 48 plants between the two I should be able to grow a fair amount of greens, though I do plan to stagger the plantings. In the existing Farm Plus I’m going to grow the tomatoes that came in the salad kit with the Farm in one of the units. I think those are the Mega and golden tomatoes. In the other unit I’m going to try a dwarf tomato plant from some seed I got from Victory. More on that later. In the new Farm Plus it’ll be all peppers. Sweet Heat, Jalapeño, and Admiral hybrids. I’ve got all of the seeds in as well as GH nutes and some Mooch. Just waiting on my new gardens!

Woo hoo, that’ll be fun!!!
Btw those 2 tomato seeds are my favorite. I’m glad they brought back the Mega, I don’t know why they ever discontinued it.

Question for the group then: How many of the AG cherry tomato plants would you plant on a single side of a Farm Plus?
I was originally thinking two, but AG only provides 8 hole covers with the Farm Plus. Should wait for more covers to come with my new units or should I plant four on one side?

You can always cover the open holes with cardboard or something else until you get more covers.

As we speak I’m cutting foil to neatly cover some of the leftover pod baskets from the lettuce garden. Two plants it is.

Great idea with the foil over the baskets! Now why couldn’t I think of that when I really needed covers?? I tried to get creative, but failed, lol.

New pump and a new "pump tower" (the black tube that goes up to the deck) are on the way to me from AeroGrow. Customer support was quick and easy.
